Uniforms of the United States Navy, 1810-1815
These are the uniforms worn by the United States Navy during the War of 1812. Obviously, the evolution of 19th century fashion has finally found its way into the American military, introducing fore-n-aft bicorns and tailcoats as uniform items. The rank of Master Commandant (usually shortened to “Commander”) was introduced and Lieutenants, Commanding were often referred to as Lieutenant-Commanders. There were no specific details regarding the button holes of the Captain’s uniform; as such, some captains trimmed their button holes with gold, usually those holding the appointment of Commodore. The uniforms are, from top to bottom, left to right:
Line Officers
- Midshipman
- Lieutenant
- Master Commandant
- Captain
- Captain/Commodore Variation
Staff Officers
- Sailing Master
- Purser
- Surgeon
- Surgeon’s Mate
- Chaplain (No Prescribed Uniform; Clerical Attire Shown)
United States Marine Corps
- Private
- Corporal
- Sergeant
- Lieutenant
- Captain
